Every major case manufacturer now offers MagSafe versions of their popular lines. The user experience with a thin non-MagSafe case is functional but compromised. The satisfying magnetic snap that defines MagSafe becomes a tentative, weaker pull. Thick and Rugged Cases: Likely Blocked

The increased distance between the phone's magnets and the external accessory weakens the magnetic field below the threshold needed for reliable attachment. Even if a charger manages to cling to the case, the charging speed may be severely reduced or the phone may not recognize the charger as MagSafe at all, falling back to basic 7.5-watt Qi speeds.
Some thick case brands have solved this problem by offering rugged cases with built-in MagSafe magnets. Wallet-style cases with front flaps present an additional challenge. The flap that covers the screen must be folded back before a MagSafe charger can attach to the rear. Some users find this inconvenient, especially with car mounts where you want a quick one-handed attachment. If you use a folio or wallet case, consider whether the daily routine of folding the flap is acceptable before committing to MagSafe accessories.
Materials That Affect MagSafe
Case material plays a role in how well MagSafe works through it. Non-metallic materials like silicone, TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane), polycarbonate, and aramid fiber (Kevlar) are all transparent to magnetic fields and allow MagSafe to function. The only factor with these materials is the physical thickness, since they do not block or absorb magnetic energy.
Metal cases and cases with metal plates or inserts are the exception. Metal interferes with both the magnetic field and the wireless charging signal, potentially blocking MagSafe entirely. If a case has a metal ring, metal kickstand, or metal plate for a non-MagSafe car mount, these can disrupt MagSafe performance. Aluminum and steel are the most common culprits. If you see a case advertised as having a "built-in metal plate for magnetic mounting," verify that the plate is designed for MagSafe rather than an older-style magnetic mount, as older plates are positioned differently and can block the charging coil.
Carbon fiber cases deserve a specific mention. Real carbon fiber is electrically conductive and can interfere with wireless charging. However, most "carbon fiber" phone cases actually use aramid fiber or carbon fiber composite with non-conductive layers, which work fine with MagSafe. Check the product specifications if you are considering a carbon fiber style case, as the distinction matters for MagSafe compatibility.
How to Test Your Case's MagSafe Compatibility
If you already have a case and want to know how it affects MagSafe, there is a simple test. Attach a MagSafe charger or wallet to the back of your phone with the case on and gently tilt the phone to different angles. A properly MagSafe-compatible case will hold the accessory firmly at any angle, including fully upside down. A thin non-MagSafe case may hold at slight angles but allow the accessory to slide at steeper tilts. If the accessory barely attaches or falls off easily, your case is too thick or has materials that block the magnets.
You can also check charging speed directly. Place your iPhone on a MagSafe charger with your case on and watch the charging rate in Settings under Battery. Compare this to the rate with the case removed. If the speed drops significantly or the phone does not recognize the charger as MagSafe (showing standard Qi charging instead), your case is interfering.
