IP ratings follow the IEC 60529 international standard and use a two-digit code to describe exactly how well a device resists solid particles and water. Understanding what each digit means, and how manufacturers apply these ratings differently, helps you compare waterproof phone cases accurately and choose the right protection level for your needs.

How to Read an IP Rating

Every IP rating follows the format IP followed by two digits. The first digit rates protection against solid objects, from dust particles to fingers. The second digit rates protection against water, from light drips to full submersion under pressure. When either digit is replaced with an X, it means the product was not tested for that category. For example, IPX8 means the product was tested for water submersion but not for dust or solid particle protection.

The two digits are independent ratings. A product with IP68 has the highest solid particle protection (6) combined with beyond-one-meter submersion protection (8). A product with IP54 has moderate dust protection (5) and splash protection from all directions (4). For phone cases, you will almost exclusively encounter ratings in the IP6X range for solids (dust-tight) and IPX7 to IPX8 range for water (immersion protection).

First Digit: Solid Particle Protection

0: No protection against solid objects.

1: Protection against objects larger than 50mm, such as the back of a hand. Prevents accidental contact with large body parts but does not block smaller objects or particles.

2: Protection against objects larger than 12.5mm, such as a finger. Prevents finger access to internal components.

3: Protection against objects larger than 2.5mm, such as thick wires and small tools. Blocks screwdriver tips and similar objects.

4: Protection against objects larger than 1mm, such as thin wires and small screws. Blocks most physical probes but does not seal against dust.

5: Dust-protected. Not completely dust-tight, but dust ingress is limited to amounts that will not interfere with operation. Adequate for most indoor environments but not for beach sand or fine construction dust.

6: Dust-tight. Complete protection against dust ingress. No dust particles enter the enclosure under any conditions. This is the rating found on phone cases marketed as waterproof, because sealing against water necessarily seals against dust as well. It is also the most important rating for beach use, where fine sand particles pose as much risk to your phone as water does.

For waterproof phone cases, you want a first digit of 6 (dust-tight). Any case with a verified IP6X rating blocks sand, dust, and all particulate matter completely. Cases rated IPX8 (with the X instead of 6) were not formally tested for dust, but the sealed pouch design of most IPX8 products blocks particles in practice even though the certification does not guarantee it.

Second Digit: Water Protection

0: No water protection.

1: Protection against vertically falling water drops. Equivalent to light condensation dripping directly down. Does not protect against splashes from any angle.

2: Protection against vertically falling drops when the device is tilted up to 15 degrees. Marginally better than level 1 but still only covers vertical drips.

3: Protection against spraying water at up to 60 degrees from vertical. Covers light rain falling at an angle but not horizontal rain or splashes.

4: Protection against splashing water from any direction. This is the minimum useful water protection for outdoor use. Covers rain from all angles and light splashes but does not protect against sustained water flow or immersion.

5: Protection against low-pressure water jets from any direction. Covers sustained rain, a garden hose at moderate pressure, and similar exposure. Does not protect against high-pressure jets or any submersion.

6: Protection against powerful water jets from any direction. Covers high-pressure hoses and wave splash. Still does not protect against submersion.

6K: Protection against high-pressure, high-temperature water jets. A more rigorous version of level 6 used in industrial and automotive applications. Not commonly encountered in consumer phone cases.

7: Protection against temporary immersion in water up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes. This is IP67, the first rating that covers actual submersion. The device can be dropped in a puddle, a shallow pool, or a sink and survive a 30-minute exposure at up to 1 meter depth. Level 7 does not guarantee protection beyond 1 meter or beyond 30 minutes.

8: Protection against continuous immersion beyond 1 meter. The exact depth and duration are specified by the manufacturer. This is where IP68 gets complicated, because two products can both carry IP68 and have very different depth ratings. Apple rates the iPhone 16 Pro Max IP68 to 6 meters for 30 minutes. Samsung rates the Galaxy S25 Ultra IP68 to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. The Catalyst waterproof case is IP68 to 10 meters. The LifeProof Fre is IP68 to 2 meters for 1 hour. All four are technically IP68, but the real world protection they offer varies dramatically.

9K: Protection against high-pressure, high-temperature, close-range water jets. This is an industrial rating for equipment that needs to survive steam cleaning and high-pressure washdown. It is not encountered in consumer phone cases.

Common Phone Case IP Ratings

IP67

Dust-tight plus immersion protection to 1 meter for 30 minutes. This rating is found on some older phone models and a few budget waterproof cases. It provides adequate protection for rain, splashes, and brief accidental submersion in shallow water. It does not cover intentional swimming or sustained submersion. If you see IP67 on a phone case, it protects against most everyday water encounters but is not suitable for water sports or active use in or around deep water.

IP68

Dust-tight plus immersion protection beyond 1 meter at a manufacturer-specified depth. This is the most common rating for both modern smartphones and premium waterproof cases. The key information is the specific depth, not just the IP68 label. When comparing cases, check the meter rating: 2 meters (LifeProof Fre), 10 meters (Catalyst), or whatever the manufacturer specifies. Higher depth ratings indicate stronger seals and more rigid construction, which translate to better reliability even at lower depths.

IPX8

Submersion protection beyond 1 meter, without dust testing. This is the standard rating for universal waterproof pouches. The JOTO pouch is rated IPX8 to 30 meters, meaning it was tested for water submersion to that depth but was not formally tested for dust ingress. In practice, a sealed pouch blocks both water and dust, but the certification only formally covers water. For practical purposes, IPX8 on a sealed pouch provides equivalent real world protection to IP68, with the dust protection coming from the design rather than from a tested certification.

Why the Same IP68 Rating Means Different Things

The IEC 60529 standard defines IP68 as protection against immersion beyond 1 meter, with conditions specified by the manufacturer. The standard sets the minimum threshold (beyond 1 meter) but does not set a maximum or standardized test depth for level 8. Each manufacturer chooses their own test depth and duration, which is why IP68 products span such a wide range of actual protection levels.

This creates a situation where a consumer might assume two IP68 products offer equivalent protection when they do not. A phone case rated IP68 to 2 meters and one rated IP68 to 10 meters have very different seal quality, structural rigidity, and real world reliability. The 10-meter case was designed and tested to withstand five times more water pressure, which means its seals have a much larger safety margin at the 2-meter depth you actually encounter in a pool. Always check the specific meter rating when comparing IP68 products rather than treating IP68 as a single standard level of protection.

IP Ratings and Real World Conditions

All IP testing is conducted under controlled laboratory conditions: fresh water, room temperature, still conditions, no chemicals, and a brand new product. Real world water exposure frequently involves conditions that are more challenging than the lab test. Saltwater is more corrosive and can damage seals faster. Chlorinated pool water is more chemically aggressive. Hot tub water combines heat with chemical exposure. Pressurized water from hoses exceeds the static pressure assumptions of submersion testing. A case rated for 2 meters in the lab may perform well at 2 meters in a real pool, but the margin between its tested capability and its failure point may be smaller in chemically treated or warm water than in the clean, cool, fresh water used in testing.

This is another reason to choose a case with a depth rating significantly above your actual usage depth. A case rated to 10 meters used at 2 meters has a large safety margin that accounts for the gap between lab conditions and real world exposure. A case rated to 2 meters used at 2 meters is operating at the edge of its certified capability, with no margin for seal wear, chemical exposure, or pressure spikes from waves or movement.
