These are measurably thicker but still remarkably thin, and the stronger material means they provide better scratch and minor impact resistance than the thinnest polypropylene options.
The 0.35 mm Tier: Bare Naked and Similar Cases
Bare Naked holds the current record for the thinnest mass-produced phone case at 0.35 mm. At this thickness, the case weighs under 8 grams and is thinner than a standard sheet of printer paper. The material is semi-rigid polypropylene with a matte finish that resists fingerprints and provides a subtle grip texture. The case wraps around the back and sides of the phone with precision-cut openings for the camera, buttons, and ports.
At 0.35 mm, the protection is limited but not nonexistent. The case creates a barrier between the phone's glass back and any surface it rests on, which prevents the micro-scratches that accumulate from daily placement on desks, tables, and countertops. It also prevents the phone from sliding on smooth surfaces, since the matte polypropylene has more friction than glass. What it does not do is absorb impact energy from drops. The practical difference between Peel and Totallee at this thickness is minimal. Both cases feel nearly identical in hand, both provide the same level of scratch protection, and both have essentially the same limitations when it comes to drops. Choosing between them typically comes down to color preference, warranty terms, or which brand currently has a promotion running.
The 0.6 mm to 0.8 mm Tier: Aramid Fiber Cases
Aramid fiber cases from PITAKA, Latercase, and Thinborne occupy the 0.6 mm to 0.85 mm thickness range, and they represent a meaningful step up in both durability and price compared to polypropylene options. Aramid fiber (the generic name for materials like Kevlar) is an aerospace-grade material with a tensile strength roughly five times greater than steel at the same weight. In phone case form, this translates to a shell that resists scratches, punctures, and abrasion far better than polypropylene while remaining remarkably thin and light.
PITAKA's MagEZ case is the most popular aramid fiber case on the market. Thinborne competes in the same space with slightly more affordable aramid cases, typically priced $10 to $15 below PITAKA and Latercase. Their cases measure around 0.7 mm to 0.85 mm and include MagSafe compatibility on most models. Thinborne does not have the brand recognition of PITAKA or Latercase, but their cases are well-reviewed for fit, finish, and value.
What You Sacrifice at Maximum Thinness
Every fraction of a millimeter you shave from a phone case comes with a trade-off, and it is important to understand exactly what you are giving up as you approach the thinnest end of the spectrum.
The most significant sacrifice is camera and screen protection. Cases under 0.5 mm typically sit flush with or slightly below the camera bump, which means the camera lens contacts any surface the phone is placed on camera-side down. The screen edge is similarly exposed. Cases in the 0.6 mm to 0.8 mm range usually include a slight lip around the camera and sometimes the screen, but the lip is measured in fractions of a millimeter and provides only marginal protection.
Drop protection degrades rapidly below 0.8 mm. While aramid cases in the 0.6 mm to 0.8 mm range offer some impact resistance, polypropylene cases under 0.5 mm offer essentially none. The material is too thin and too flexible to absorb or distribute impact energy. A phone in a 0.35 mm case that falls corner-first onto concrete will sustain the same damage as a phone with no case at all.
Grip also decreases at the thinnest levels. If you want the thinnest case that still provides meaningful scratch resistance and durability, aramid fiber from PITAKA or Latercase (0.65 mm) is the better choice at a higher price.
